Constantinople Commemorative
330

In 330, the Emperor Constantine the Great had decided to refound the ancient city of Byzantium as a new Eastern Capital of the Roman Empire, naming it after himself. This coin was struck around that time to commemorate the event. Constantine also issued a similar coin featuring Romulus and Remus suckling on a she-wolf to commemorate Rome in order to assuage hurt feelings on the part of Rome for being displaced as the Empire's most important city! Constantinople as we know, hosted the capital of what remained of the Roman Empire following the fall of Rome to the Ostrogoths in the 5th Century, and survived as the Byzantine Capital (the Byzantines themselves considered themselves to be Romans however) until 1453 when it fell to the Turks. The City was renamed as Istanbul by the Turks in the 1920s, although some people, especially the Greeks, still refer to the City as Constantinople (The City of Constantine).

The featured coin is in excellent condition.
